Sagadahoc Bridge
Location: Bath, Maine
HBG Flatiron, Inc. provided design-build services on the $46.6 million Sagadahoc Bridge, a new segmental structure connecting the towns of Bath and Woolwich. This structure, completed in July 2000, was Maine Department of Transportation's first design-build project.
Project Features:
- 3,000-foot long precast segmental structure spanning the Kennebec River. Four lanes for vehicular traffic, bike lanes, and a pedestrian sidewalk
- 3 approach spans, constructed of post-tensioned, cast-in-place concrete box girders, total 1,044 feet
- 6 main spans over the river, varying from 203 feet to the record-breaking 420 foot span over the navigational channel, are constructed of precast concrete box girder segments erected in balanced cantilever fashion
- Barge-mounted cranes erect the 201 segments that were manufactured in a riverfront casting yard near the construction site
- Foundations consist of seven piers located in the water on 8-foot diameter drilled shafts socketed 15 to 20-feet into rock
