Eastern Toll Road - Design/Build A Design-Build approach delivered $780 million toll road to the Transportation Corridor Agencies a year ahead of schedule and below budget. This HBG Flatiron led joint venture began its full-scale design effort in June 1995, with construction beginning in October 1995. The main 19-mile segment of the Eastern Toll Road opened to traffic in October 1998, 14 months before the December 1999 contractual deadline. Two additional segments opened in January and February 1999.

Environmental Components:

$80 million mitigation program

214-acre mitigation site preserving coastal sage scrub; creation and restoration of a 50-acre wetland habitat; and replanting an oak, sycamore, and willow woodland

5 wildlife bridges allowing large animal movement and 26 culverts for small animal crossings

Safe removal of more than 30,000 prehistoric specimens including camel, mammoth, and mastodon remains as well as dinosaur bones
