Former Intern
Christine Hutton
HBG Intern Program

HBG Constructors offers paid internships to civil engineering students from across the United States. It’s a great way for sophomores or juniors interested in heavy structures to get field experience during school. Better yet, most colleges and universities recognize internships for college credit. You can do an internship through any school we visit, so check out those schools on this Web Site by clicking on here, or talk to your career counselor.

Selected students may be eligible for payment of travel and living expenses if their assigned job is out of town. You can take advantage of this great opportunity during the fall or winter semester, or during the summer. You’ll put in 40 hours of work per week. Please make inquiries at least three months in advance of the time you wish to be an intern.

Typically, if you are successful as an intern, HBG Constructors will offer you a job with our company. That’s what happened with Christine Hutton, who started with us as an intern out of Colorado State University in 1990. She had attended college on an athletic scholarship, and had just earned a degree in Construction Management. “I started out as a laborer,” Christine recalls of her internship on several bridge projects in Denver. “I gained great respect for my coworkers and how they handled the physical demands they faced, especially in the winter. We’d start working in dark , work all day in the cold, and stop after dark.”

A highly motivated worker, Christine sometimes left the job site to work on bid closings in the office in the evenings. She specialized in subcontract quote management. Working in both the office and field were invaluable experiences for Christine, who is now a full-time estimator at corporate headquarters in Longmont, Colorado. She says, “You need to start anything at the bottom. That was true of my sports career as well as my professional one. First you earn respect and get to know people. Working in the field, I learned so much that helps me now with estimating.”
