FCI
Constructors Inc., Northern Division was established in 1997 when FCI
Constructors expanded its operations to northern California and formed
a separate division to focus on this area. Located in San Jose, this HBG
Constructors subsidiary has become a major player in Northern California
highway and bridge construction. The company is working on a number of
high profile projects in the San Francisco Bay Area including the reconstruction
of Interstate 580/680 in Dublin, the seismic retrofit of Interstate 80
in San Francisco, new interchanges on Route 99 near Delhi, new grade separations
at Power Inn Road in Sacramento and the new Carquinez Suspension Bridge,
the nation's first new major suspension bridge to be built in 35 years.
In 1999, Hollandsche Beton Groep, nv (HGB) created HBG Constructors,
Inc. as its North American holding company, combining the strengths of
HGB Flatiron, FCI Constructors, Inc. Interbeton, Inc., and Misener Marine
Construction, Inc. This consolidation of all the HBG-owned North American
companies into one corporate entity formalized their existing synergy.
Flatiron
Structures and Interbeton have been working together on Central Artery
projects in Boston for a number of years. On the West Coast, FCI Constructors
and Interbeton are working together on the Benicia-Martinez Bridge Seismic
Retrofit and, in a joint venture with Cleveland Bridge California, Inc.
on the new Carquinez Bridge in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. This
synergy allows HBG Constructors to offer its clients a broader range of
expertise and experience, along with increased financial resources.
A national design-build and construction organization, HBG Constructors
specializes in transportation and heavy civil projects. Its experience
encompasses major highways, traditional and specialty bridges, toll roads,
marine facilities and light rail transit projects throughout the United
States. The firm is nationally recognized for its expertise in transportation;
in the ENR 2000 Contractors Sourcebook, HGB Constructors ranked #7 in
Transportation, #2 in Bridges, and #3 in Marine and Port Facilities. In
its ranking of Design-Build Leaders, ENR ranked HBG #3 in the design-build
of transportation projects.
While
the corporation may have grown larger, it has retained the management
and the entrepreneurial spirit of its American founder, HBG Flatiron,
Inc. HBG Flatiron grew from a small construction firm in Colorado to national
prominence by giving its local management a great deal of autonomy and
control. That entrepreneurial spirit combined with experienced professional
managers creates an atmosphere conducive to seizing opportunities, to
looking for new ways of delivering a project, and to clear and open lines
of communication.
