The Flatirons
Boulder, CO

Origin of the Flatiron name:

In recent years, construction projects have taken us far beyond the borders of our home base in Colorado. Since we are now working nationwide, people occasionally ask about our organization's name.

The original Flatiron entity began in 1947 as a ready-mixed concrete business. The company was one of the first in the area to offer concrete that was pre-mixed and trucked to the jobsite. The business had two 3-cubic yard and two 4-cubic yard mixer trucks and a small batch plant located east of Boulder, Colorado.

When Harold Short, the founder of the Flatiron group of companies, began managing the small enterprise in 1953, he decided to give the company a distinctive new name. He renamed the fledgling business after the prominent, tilted, red sandstone rock formation that rises up in the foothills on the west edge of Boulder. When viewed from the side, these rocks resemble a series of huge flatirons standing on their bases. More specifically, a flatiron is a non-electric iron heated on a stove or fire and used to press wrinkles from clothes. The Flatiron name enables us to bring a bit of our history with us as we grow and expand to larger markets.
