"Flatiron attracted me because it is an aggressive construction company with challenging projects all over the continent," explains Steve Marko, who came on board in October. He brings with him considerable expertise and over two decades of experience.
A Canadian native, Steve grew up all over Canada as his family followed his carpenter father from one construction site to another. Following in his father's footsteps, Steve started working construction right out of high school. He worked for Pigott Construction from 1983 to 1993 on a variety of projects in Canada.
From 1993 to 1998, Steve served as area manager for the Confederation Bridge Pproject. This massive project provided a 23kn transportation link over ice-filled waters between Prince Edward Island and Canada's mainland. Some 13 km (8 miles) of the project included an overwater bridge. "Each main girder weighs 7,200 tons," says Steve, "and they are 196 meters long!" He worked with Dipak Parekh and mark Mallette on that massive structure, providing a later connection with Flatiron Structures.
Prior to joining Flatirons, Steve served as construction manager for a light rail system for the City of Calgary. He is currently working with the estimating team in the Longmont office. As soon as we land a new job suited to his skills, he'll be relocating as a project manager. Meanwhile his wife Sarah has stayed in Calgary where she maintained a home base during the 34 years of their marriage. The couple has three grown children, and three granddaughters. "I never turn down a golf game," says Steve and he's an avid fiction reader.
