This series of concentric, single-cell, box-girder bridges will route traffic in and out of Logan Airport in Boston. The below-ground work is now near completion, so the focus will be on completing the viaducts.
The Logan Airport Interchange in Boston is now approximately 86% complete. The M. Dematteo/Flatiron Structures joint-venture project has experienced many schedule changes due to redesign of electrical work, viaduct structures, permanent roadways and other revisions. With so many owner-initiated changes, the contract value has risen from $158 million to $185 million, with other changes and claims pending.
However, some major delays were resolved in August, and crews are currently working on final completion of the last ten spans of viaduct. With work ongoing in three separate areas, the viaducts should be substantially completed by the end of this working season.
Stripping of falsework and construction of bridge parapets will continue through the winter. Major portions of the microsilica deck overlay should also be completed by the end of this construction season.
The workforce in the field is approximately 160 people, with an overhead staff at 35 individuals. With all of the changes, the project is now scheduled for completion by June 2001.
