FCI North to tackle technical challenge at the 580/680

The massive footing at the southeast connector at bent 17 holds 650 cubic yards of concrete.
The most exciting and technically challenging portions of the 580/680 project in Pleasanton, California are about to get underway. Within a month, FCI North crews will be constructing the southeast connector flyover ramp over I-580, and over the Bay Area Rapid Transit system. This frame will be the last of nine frames of this structure. Completion of this 4,400-foot flyover is scheduled for October 2001.

So far, industrious FCI North crews have placed 44,250 cubic yards of concrete, installed 11,400,000 pounds of reinforcing steel, driven 3,464 pilings, moved 177,800 cubic yards of earthwork, and placed 50,000 tons of asphalt. The $53 million project encompasses erecting five new bridges and four widenings.

The next section of the flyover bridge over I-580 is scheduled for erection in March.
Current major operations include stripping the falsework over I-680 and pouring the bottom deck and stem concrete of one of the bridge frames in the flyover ramp. Removing the falsework over I-680 will bring Pleasanton a dramatic view of the changes the project is bringing to the area.

Project manager Walt Quincy reports that the project will be substantially complete by the end of this year. The south-to-west ramp will open in June, and the new south-to-east connector will open in December.
