Work continues at Lemon Grove, California

The Lemon Grove project east of San Diego involves constructing an interchange at Routes 125 and 94. Most of FCI South's work on the $62 million project has shifted from the south to the north side of Route 94. Crews drilling 10-foot shafts for bridge columns in the median of Route 94 are contending with holes and cave ins in the old fill. Slurry is being used to drill the shafts 60-feet deep.

Meanwhile, earth work for the new Dexter Road is in its final phase. FCI South crews are doing all the utility work in a rocky area that requires some blasting. Construction of the new road will create room to build bridges on the north side of Route 94.

Members of the 70-person crew are also working on the middle of the northeast connector that crosses Sweetwater Road. They are now pouring concrete for soffit stems on the first of three frames. Project manager Tom Cameron predicts a portion of the deck on frame one will be poured by the first week in April.

Building falsework has been a challenge on this project. The falsework slopes sideways to the bridge, putting the beams at strange angles. In addition, crews are working over a busy roadway. As the rainy season continues, storm water runoff is a major concern. The project is currently on schedule and budget.
