California's 580/680 project faces

Completion of the largest frame (706 feet long) of the main bridge over Bay Area Rapid Transit is the focus of current construction at the 580/680 project. This frame is the last of nine frames in the flyover.
FCI North crews in Pleasanton are scrambling to complete the southeast connector flyover by December 21, 2001. A change order was negotiated to credit the owner days to the December 21st date in return for financial compensation.

The $54 million project will be completed a year ahead of schedule.

To meet the new deadline, crews started working extended shifts on critical parts of the project in mid September. The last two deck pours on the nine-frame southeast connector will be made the first week in October.

The 4,400-foot, completed flyover will cross BART and I-580.

According to project manager Dave Horn, after the connector is opened, the remaining work on the project will consist mainly of paving, grading and other subcontracted work. There will be one more ramp to open, and a second ramp to widen. The total project consisted of building five bridges and widening four roadways. Final completion is expected at the end of May 2002. Construction at this very busy intersection of two major interstates has been going on since 1999.
