This project to construct elevated and at-grade roadways from the Logan Airport terminal to Route 1A and the Ted Williams Tunnel has experienced yet another delay. Because of design problems, the critical date for the completion of Milestone Six has been shifted from October 1, 2001 to February 22, 2002. This will delay the completion of the project until March 2004. "We've been here continuously since September 1998," recalls project manager Vic Csendes with a sigh.

Although the project has had numerous delays, an end appears to be in sight. For the first
time, workers can walk from one end of the job to the other either on falsework and decking, or placed concrete. Fifteen of the total 29 viaduct spans required for Milestone Six have now been completed. After crews have completed the viaduct structure, they will focus on roadwork underneath the viaduct in front of the terminal.
"Despite our progress, some of the contractors we tie into will not be ready when we are," says Vic. He attributes the challenges of this project to several factors. The job site is extremely tight, surrounded by pedestrians and cars arriving and departing from Logan Airport. This congestion has forced some of the operations to occur at night. Numerous change orders have complicated the project. Another factor is the tight labor market in Boston, making it very difficult to find skilled tradesmen.
