Cooper River Bridge project gearing up for construction
In Charleston, South Carolina, Palmetto Bridge Constructors are getting ready to launch construction on the $531 million project. The job is a joint venture of Flatiron's Civil Division and Tidewater/SKANKA to build a cable-stayed bridge over the Cooper River. When completed, the main span will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America.
With the holiday season quickly approaching, 25 Flatiron employees have now moved to Charleston, and several more are scheduled to arrive in the New Year. The main project office has been established, and everyone has moved in. The job is currently nearing the end of its start-up phase. Our designers, Parsons Brinkerhoff, have been hard at work developing the final design so construction can begin.
The project team has been securing the required permits and getting materials and equipment ready. The main focus has been to develop the work plan, choose the best work methods, and create the final budget and schedule for the project.
John Ross has assembled the beginnings of the QA/QC management group, which
promises to be one of the finest we have ever assembled. At the nucleus of this group are 11 Flatiron employees who transferred from the recently completed SR 44 project in New Mexico. Many thanks to Dipak Parekh for making them available!
