Like all construction workers, Ron Gavin dislikes delays. Now that the Logan Airport Interchange has overcome various obstacles like detours and moving utilities, the site superintendent is delighted. He says,"At last we have unfettered access to real estate! It feels good to the whole crew to get to this point where we can go full speed ahead."
Such challenges are certainly nothing new to this 26-year, civil-construction veteran. His diversity of experience as a project superintendent and general superintendent has ranged from work on railway, highway, water treatment/sewage treatment, instiutional construction, and the processing industry. His more recent employers have included Pigott Construction, Ellis-Don Construction, and Walter & SCI Contractors.
Although Ron is not a "city guy," he has adjusted to living in the Boston area. He likes the fact that it is a walking city, as opposed to more spread-out cities like Dallas. "I prefer any city to working from a tent in the bush," he states. Ron and his wife Zita are building a home on horse property in Alberta near a huge national park. Western pleasure riding is his favorite hobby, and he owns three horses. He flies home once a month, or Zita flies to Boston for a visit.
Ron continues to enjoy his career in construction despite many moves. "It's been fun to see the progress in technology," he comments. He started out doing math by hand, looking up sines and cosines on a slide rule. "Now days we have to find more people and move them around a lot," he says, "but in basic ways construction hasn't changed since Roman times. We still use stone and concrete." Ah, yes, but wouldn't Caesar be amazed at the Logan Airpot Exchange project!
