In Monterey County, California, FCI crews are putting the finishing touches on seismic upgrades of 12 bridges in a 75-mile radius of each other.
The project has consisted of two contracts, one for $2.42 million, and the other for $4.8 million, with six bridges in each contract.
According to Dave Polette, project manager, this update of old county bridges used by farmers and rural residents has been needed for a long time. The work has ranged from minor abutment reinforcements to attaching new piling with new bent caps at existing piers.
At Cattleman's Bridge, one of the larger bridges on the project, FCI crews installed 20 portal frames.

High military security after the September 11th terrorist attacks slowed the project down. FCI trucks and equipment originally had free access to one bridge on the project through the Army base at Fort Hunter Ligget. After the attacks, there were delays due to high security. A redesign of the bridge also delayed contruction.
However, the project is going to be completed on time by the end of 2001.
