Project Overview:
HBG Flatiron,
managing partner of Palmetto Transportation Constructors, constructed
a $250 million design/build project for the Carolina Bays Parkway,
in joint venture with Tidewater
Skanska. The contract included design, right-of-way acquisition,
utility relocation and construction of a new limited access
highway. This 34-month project was completed eight months ahead
of schedule. The new roadway is named SC31 (click
for map) and will run northwest of the South Carolina coast
between Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach.
Construction adjacent to environmentally sensitive coastal
marsh areas required five bridges to span marsh wetlands.
Protection of this fragile coastal marsh environment is a
high priority, and the team utilized "top down"
construction techniques to protect the area. The grand opening
took place on December 17, 2002.
