Project Overview:
This design/build approach delivered the $801 million toll
road to the Transportation Corridor Agencies more than a year
ahead of schedule and below budget. This FCI
South led joint venture began its final design effort
in June 1994, with construction beginning in October 1994.
The main 19-mile segment of the Eastern Toll Road opened to
traffic in October 1998, 14 months before the December 1999
contractual deadline. Two additional segments opened in January
and February 1999.

Project Features:
28 miles of four-to-six lane highway
4 freeway-to-freeway interchanges
5 interchanges for access to local streets
69 bridges, 3 tunnels and 10 toll plazas
State-of-the-art toll collection system

Interesting Facts:
Moved 67 million cubic yards of earthwork
Placed 450,000 cubic yards of structural concrete and 1.5
million tons of asphalt concrete
Paved 140 lane miles
Built 1.7 million square feet of structures
Obtained over 1,000 permits and relocated 150 major utilities
$80 million mitigation program, including a 214-acre mitigation
site creating coastal sage scrub; creation and restoration
of a 50-acre wetland habitat; and replanting an oak, sycamore,
and willow woodland
5 wildlife bridges allowing large animal movement and 26
culverts for small animal crossings
Safe removal of more than 30,000 prehistoric specimens including
camel, mammoth, and mastodon remains as well as dinosaur bones
