Project Overview:

FCI South constructed a new six-lane freeway to freeway interchange for California state routes 94 and 125. The $62 million Caltrans project was located in the cities of Lemon Grove and La Mesa.

This project used the cast-in-place method which involved first building large wooden forms, adding rebar to these forms and pouring concrete to create the foundation of the bridge. Columns were drilled into the ground 60-70 feet and in some cases, rebar was inserted into the rock and then spread, providing additional support. This project was completed in March, 2003.

Project Features:

Seven prestressed box girder bridges totaling 9,900 feet of bridge structures


Largest structure is 2,992 feet long and rises more than 110 feet above ground

Bridges founded on cast-in-drilled-hole piles, 11 feet in diameter and driven 60 feet deep


Other structures include 21,000 square feet of MSE walls; 3600 cubic yards of concrete retaining walls; and 54,000-square-feet of masonry sound walls


1.2 million square feet of new road will be added to the state highway system, equaling almost 19 miles of single lane road


Project quantities include 17 million pounds of structural steel; 60,000 cubic yards of structural concrete; 7,600 cubic yards of concrete paving; and 39,000 tons of asphalt paving
