Project Overview:
FCI South
constructed a 3.2-mile section of the San Diego Light Rail
Transit system, linking Old Town with Qualcomm Stadium, a
project commissioned by the Metropolitan Transit Development
Board.
This $62.4 million project blended traditional bridgework
with light-rail track and catenary systems. The 30-month schedule
was critical; all work had to be completed so the transit
line could open for the 1998 Super Bowl, held at Qualcomm
Stadium. FCI South completed the project ahead of schedule.
Project Features:
3.2 miles of new light rail trackwork with 1.5 miles of elevated
track, traction power and catenary systems
3 trolley stations - two at-grade and one elevated. The elevated
station includes an at-grade bus station and an elevated LRT
station, complete with an elevator and two pedestrian bridges
that allow access to the upper station
3 prestressed cast-in-place structures carry the line through
environmentally sensitive areas, over a major freeway and
an adjacent 20-acre wetland
Structures work included over one mile of cast-in-place, prestressed
bridges; reinforced concrete retaining walls, mechanically
stabilized retaining walls, and pedestrian structures
1200-foot tunnel to encase the 78-inch sewer line that runs
through the site; tunnel preserves an archaeologically sensitive
area containing Native American artifacts
Significant roadway reconstruction and utility work, including
a $5 million sewer relocation
