Project Overview
HBG
Flatiron and Interbeton, in a
joint venture with M. DeMatteo Construction,
built a segment of the I-90 extension
to Logan Airport for the Massachusetts
Highway Department. This $198 million
project, was completed in 2002, and
bordered two other Central Artery/Tunnel
contracts.
The primary element is a 1,250 foot-long
and up to 380 foot-wide tunnel to
carry traffic from Logan Airport under
the city. This tunnel project connects
to other projects in Boston's famous
Big
Dig.
Project Features:
1250-foot-long reinforced cut and
cover tunnel, with a width varying
from 240 to 380 feet and an excavation
depth of 50 to 60 feet including cast-in-place
boat and tunnel sections
Massive utility relocations; two
temporary bridges were built to suspend
utilities and reroute traffic over
the excavation and tunnels during
construction
Excavation and disposal of 80,000
cubic yards of hazardous and 580,000
cubic yards of non-hazardous materials
Design and construction of slurrywalls
and sheet piles including the installation
