Project Overview:
The California Department of Transportation recently awarded
FCI North
a new $39 million project in Northern California, just south
of the Benicia/Martinez Bridge retrofit project completed
by FCI this past summer. This new contract is part of a large
four-contract project to construct a new toll bridge that
will carry northbound traffic over the Carquinez Strait from
Martinez to Benicia.
Both southbound and northbound traffic currently flow over
the western, retrofitted bridge, but when this project is
completed, the northbound traffic will be directed onto FCI's
new approach, through the new toll plaza, and onto the new
bridge. Southbound traffic will remain on the older bridge.
The project, which began on September 10, 2002, will take
northbound I-680 lanes from their current alignment north
to the new Benicia/Martinez Toll Plaza. The project focuses
on two main structures, the Mococo Bridge and the Mococo On-Ramp.
The project site consists of brackish marshlands and sits
between the Tessoro and Shell Oil Refineries as well as the
Rhodia Chemical Plant. In addition to Marina Vista Road, the
Mococo Bridge will cross seven sets of oil and gas pipelines
(both above and below ground), and two sets of railroad tracks.
