concrete trucks at 85/87

route 85/87 interchange completion

Project Overview:

The four main sections of this $23.5 million job include the South 85/ North 87 connector separation, North 85/North 87 connector over crossing modification, Southbound Route 87 connector and Guadalupe River bridge widening.

This project, located in Northern California near San Jose, is the completion of an interchange built 12 years ago. Flyover ramps will connect southbound Route 85 to northbound Route 87 and southbound Route 87 to northbound Route 85. The new flyovers will connect to two structures that were partially built during the original construction and will help to remove freeway traffic from local streets.

"One challenge is to keep freeway and light rail traffic flowing through the project, under and around the construction," says project manager Walt Quincy. "Work over or immediately adjacent to the traffic is performed behind protective barriers or done at night during lane closures." Substantial penalties could be incurred if the closures exceed their allowed time periods.

The project is approximately half completed, and is progressing ahead of schedule with falsework erection finished at the end of October. The estimated date of completion is May, 2003.

Project Features:

A connector separation involving 523-meter, three-framed, prestressed concrete box girder bridge, including a total of 6,068 meters of piling and 6,545 cubic meters of concrete

An over-crossing modification with a 12.5-meter, reinforced concrete bridge with 201 meters of piling, and 328 cubic meters of concrete. This is a 1.83-meter-thick slab bridge to an existing bridge

A southbound route 87 connector with a 477-meter prestressed concrete box-girder bridge of two frames with a total of 2,862 meters of piling, and 3,708 cubic meters of concrete

A bridge widening using a 129-meter concrete box girder bridge with a total of 1,484 meters of piling, and 1,265 cubic meters of concrete

The project will use 16,000 tons of asphalt concrete, 15,000 cubic meters of excavation and 92,000 cubic meters of embankment
