On January 29, 2002, Governor
Gray Davis of the State of California
launched the construction of
the new 1.2-mile deck replacement
of the eastern span of the San
Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge
(SFOBB). This portion of the
famous bridge connects Yerba
Buena Island and the city of
Oakland. This project is part
of a seismic retrofit and will
take about 4 years to complete.
It is the largest single contract
in the history of Caltrans.
This $1.04 billion project
is a joint venture led by Kiewit
Pacific Company of Vancouver,
Washington. This joint venture
includes two of HBG Constructors'
business units, FCI
North and HBG
Flatiron, and Manson
Construction.
The east span will be replaced
by a self-anchored, single-tower
suspension span that will cross
the shipping channel, connecting
to a classical skyway. The segments
will be erected by beam and
winch method with segments delivered
by barge from the casting yard
in Stockton. The single-tower
suspension span will carry 10
lanes of traffic between Oakland
shore and Yerba Buena Island.
The project design will create
the safest bridge in the world
capable of withstanding major
earthquakes on both the Hayward
or San Andreas Faults, an effort
initiated after the Loma Prieta
Earthquake in 1989. This project
will be completed in March,
2006.
