
Project Overview:
FCI South
is leading the second phase of a project to construct Route
56, a new east/west freeway connecting Interstate 15 with
Interstate 5 in San Diego, California. Phase 1 began in October
of 1999 and involved building a four-lane highway with five
bridges, extending from Black Mountain Road to Camino Ruiz.
Phase 2 began in August, 2002, and will extend this new freeway
4.5 miles east. The project will be completed in August, 2004.

Ongoing earthwork and drainage
Rancho San Diego Farms Bridge superstructure is 50% complete
Crews are beginning work on the vehicular overcrossing
Falsework erection has begun on the Camino Ruiz
November 2002
Falsework erection is schedule to begin on the Camino Ruiz
and Rancho San Diego Farm bridges
Foundations are under construction on the McGonigle Bridge
and the abutments are being excavated on the vehicular crossing
bridge.
October 2002
Phase 1 earthwork and drainage are underway and Camino Ruiz
bridge abutments are under construction

14 cast-in-place box girder bridges
200,000 tons of Class II aggregate base
2,000,000 yards of roadway excavation
30,000 cubic yards of concrete pavement
45,000 tons of asphalt paving
15,000 linear feet of reinforced concrete drainage pipe
